# Guided Onboarding

> Set up a new workspace in a few questions, then build your first agent in a guided chat with Beam AI.

A new workspace does not start empty. A short setup asks what your company does, how big your team is, and what your role is, then hands you to a chat where Beam AI builds your first agent from those answers. You leave with a working agent and its first test task under way.

<Note>
  Guided onboarding runs for every workspace you create, not only the first one. Choosing **Create or join workspace** from the workspace picker later takes you through the same setup and chat. Joining a workspace you were invited to skips it.
</Note>

<h2 id="what-guided-onboarding-is">
  What guided onboarding is
</h2>

<h3 id="when-it-runs">
  When it runs
</h3>

You meet guided onboarding in two places:

* **When you sign up.** Once you are signed in and have no workspace yet, Beam opens the setup straight away.
* **When you create another workspace.** Open the workspace picker in the top-left corner and choose **Create or join workspace**.

If someone has already invited you to a workspace, the setup first shows **Join a workspace at Beam** with a card for each invitation. Selecting **Join** takes you into that workspace with no setup and no chat. Selecting **Create new workspace** starts the setup for a workspace of your own.

<h3 id="the-two-parts">
  The two parts
</h3>

| Part | What happens there |
| - | - |
| **Workspace setup** | You fill in your profile, name the workspace, answer four questions, and can invite teammates. The workspace is created along the way. |
| **Onboarding chat** | Beam AI reads your answers, opens the conversation, and builds your first agent with you. It ends with a **View Agent** button. |

Inside the setup, every question needs an answer before **Next** becomes available. The chat is optional: **Skip** is at the top of it the whole time.

<h3 id="the-four-questions">
  The four questions
</h3>

After you name the workspace, the setup asks four questions, one per screen.

| Question | How many you pick | Choices |
| - | - | - |
| **What does *your workspace* do?** | Any number | **Outsourcing / BPO**, **Financial Services**, **Recruiting & Staffing**, **Consulting**, **Construction & Trades**, **Retail & E-commerce**, **Marketing / Agency**, **Software / Tech**, **Education**, **Other** |
| **How big is your team?** | One | **2–10**, **11–50**, **51–200**, **201–1,000**, **1,000+**, **Just me for now** |
| **What's your role?** | One | **Sales**, **Customer Support**, **Operations**, **Finance**, **HR / Recruiting**, **Marketing**, **Product / PM**, **Engineering**, **Executive / Founder**, **Other** |
| **What should your first agent do?** | One | Three suggestions based on your role, plus **Something else…** |

The first question shows your workspace name in place of *your workspace*, and the role question addresses you by your first name.

The last question changes with your role. A marketer sees **Content drafting**, **Campaign tracking**, and **Lead scoring**. Someone in finance sees **Invoice processing**, **Reconcile transactions**, and **Financial reports**. Choosing **Something else…** opens a text box where you describe the agent in your own words.

<h3 id="what-beam-does-with-your-answers">
  What Beam does with your answers
</h3>

Your answers are saved with the workspace when it is created, and Beam AI starts the onboarding chat from them. You do not face an empty message box: Beam AI speaks first, greets you, and works from the agent you picked. While it prepares that first message, the chat shows short status lines such as "Going through your answers to understand how you work...".

From there the chat has one job, which is building that agent. Beam AI may ask you questions about how the work is done today. If the agent needs an integration, such as a mailbox or a CRM, Beam AI asks you to connect it inside the chat before it creates the agent, so the agent is never built against a tool that is not connected.

<h3 id="what-happens-after-view-agent">
  What happens after View Agent
</h3>

When the agent is built, Beam AI posts a short summary of what it does, with a **View Agent** button under it. Selecting the button ends onboarding for the workspace and opens the agent's **Flow**, with the **Beam AI** panel open beside it.

The panel starts a new conversation on its own with the message "My agent is ready. Run a first test task with a sample payload and show me the progress". Beam AI then runs that first task and reports its progress in the panel, so you see the agent work before you change anything.

<h3 id="leaving-before-you-finish">
  Leaving before you finish
</h3>

The workspace is created at the moment you answer the last question, not when you name it. What happens if you leave depends on which side of that moment you are on.

| You leave | What happens |
| - | - |
| During the questions | Nothing is created and your answers are not kept. You start the questions again next time. |
| After the workspace is created | The workspace exists, but onboarding is still open. Opening any page of that workspace takes you back to the onboarding chat. In the same browser, the conversation picks up where you left it. |
| By selecting **Skip** in the chat | Onboarding ends for that workspace. You land on the workspace home and the chat does not come back. No agent is built. |

<Info>
  Onboarding keeps bringing you back to the chat until it is finished, because the workspace records whether onboarding is done. Selecting **View Agent** or **Skip** are the two ways to finish it.
</Info>
